Coastal Velociraptor

”The fossil record shows raptors living like wolves or lions, hunting in groups. Ours did the same - perhaps a genetically coded social trait.”

Description:

While the majority of the public is well aware of the Lowland and Highland Velociraptor breeds, there has been much speculation regarding a possible third tribe/breed inhabiting Isla Sorna. This concept was even explored in the 1998's videogame 'Jurassic Park Trespasser' with the Forest, Jungle, and Mountain Tribes.

This is where the Coastal Velociraptors enter. The Coastal Velociraptor is a proposed third breed that dwells on Isla Sorna. They are a hybrid lineage of Lowland and Highland Velociraptor breeds, sharing distinctive characteristics of the two strains.

The Breed was intended to be seen in the Viral Website 'DinoTracker' released in 2022, but the concept was eventually scrapped. It is unclear if the Coastal Velociraptors are canon.

Did you know?

The Coastal Velociraptors are a hybrid breed of Lowland and Highland Velociraptors, sharing elements of both their predecessors. It is also speculated a euthanized female utilized early in the IBRIS program—codenamed "Subject V-2"—was a Coastal Velociraptor.

Habitat & Geographical Ranging:

Based on its common name, it is speculated the Coastal Velociraptors inhabit the coastal regions of Isla Sorna, away from the lush jungle regions of the Highland strain or the open fields and more temperate territories of the Lowland breed on Sorna.

The shoreline of the island is an unusual habit for an apex predator. As described by John Hammond and speculated by Paul Kirby, the predatory dinosaurs of Sorna established their territories deep within the island’s interior. As Compsognathus were one of the few species to venture out to the coast, it is possible that the Coastal Velociraptors may have subsisted on small animals like Compies and whatever other species that may roam the beaches of the Island.

Individual Variation:

Just like the other breeds, the Coastal Velociraptor demonstrate distinct sexual dimorphism. A consequence of the hybridization between Highland and Lowland individuals is their exotic and vibrant phenotype, presenting characteristics from both parent lineages.

The males are principally red toned, with a beige belly and predominant black stripes and orange and red highlights. The back of their necks feature short, subtle quills, while the orbital fenestrae is a dark blue. The male also has large green eyes with a thin vertical pupil. Male Coastal Velociraptors inherited the long horizontal white stripe of the male of Highland breed, the stripe is broken into segments but stretches across the entire body.

The females sport a vibrant lilac body tone, maintaining a beige belly and thick, vertical cream stripes with a dark outline. The orbit surrounding the eye is a dark red while the eye itself is yellow with a vertical pupil. The tip of the tail is a deep red.

Via Masrani Global's Website material, we got a glimpse at the concept of Coastal Raptors being used within the I.B.R.I.S program for Jurassic World. A specific Female individual, nicknamed 'Subject V-2' was considered for the program, but rejected due aggressiveness. Subject V-2 lacked vertical white stripes over her neck, and instead had blue highlight as well as green eyes instead of yellow.
