Leatherback Stegosaurus

”These animals, you’ve just seen them? It’s a family group! […] The hatchlings definitely stay in the birth environment for extended period of time, that’s conclusive!”

Description:

Stegosaurus is a large herbivorous dinosaur from the Late Jurassic Period, it is one of the most iconic dinosaurs thanks to its distinctive plates on its back, alongside the two pairs of “spikes” at the end of the tail called thagomizers. Stegosaurus is a quadrupedal dinosaur, sporting large back limbs with shorter front limbs, followed by a short neck and tiny beaked head. It lived in what is now the USA alongside dinosaurs such as Allosaurus, Ceratosaurus and Camarasaurus.

This particular breed, called Leatherback Stegosaurus (as a reference to its leathery skin), is a large breed of Stegosaurus that was first seen in 1997 by Dr. Ian Malcolm, Nick Van Owen, Eddie Carr and Sarah Harding during their expedition to Site B. There, a family group could be seen migrating in the redwood forests of the island, various adults and juveniles alongside a single infant individual. This particular infant sparkled Sarah’s attention, who while trying to take photos of it, got alarmed by the camera’s noises, calling for its parents.

Leatherback Stegosaurs are shown to be extremely territorial animals, protecting their young as soon as a threat is posed upon them, actively charging at the threat or swinging their powerful tails to hit with their thagomizers. The Leatherback Stegosaurus sports a mossy tone of green on its back, followed by light cream belly and brown plates, serving as a good camouflage from predators in the woods.

Size Estimates:

Adult: 6m Tall 12.5m Long
Infant: 1.6m Tall 2.9m Long

Did you know?

The infant seen in The Lost World was nicknamed Claire by the production team!

Habitat & Geographical Ranging:

Being commonly found in Redwood forests, the Leatherback Stegosaurus seeks refuge nearby the center of Isla Sorna, where the largest redwoods and conifer trees form dense lush forests to live on. The herbivore could also be found in Pine forests on the southeast of the Island, living nearby coastal forests with a cooler humid weather. A third population of Leatherback Stegosaurus can also be found on the western section of Isla Sorna, this population however, thrives in lush tropical jungles and vast open grasslands as seen by Dr. Grant in 2001.

The geographical range of this breed of Stegosaur is limited solely to the Costa Rican island of Isla Sorna, seen during the late 90s and early 2000s, this breed would be replaced by a new version for the construction of Jurassic World. It is unclear what happened to the Leatherback Stegosaurs and what’s their current population status.
