Description:

Originating from Asia, the Banana, or Banana Tree, is a species of plant popularly known all over the world. It belongs to the genus Musa, containing over 50 different species thanks to human influence and cultivation across different environments and continents. Two species in particular, Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana produce edible banana fruits. Bananas have suffered through various mutations and hybridization process throughout time.

In Jurassic Park’s History, Banana Trees have been commonly seen in various of the tropical Islands off the coast of Costa Rica, first seen nearby the Visitors Center in 1993. The plant would also be seen in Jurassic World next to Owen’s Bungalow and at the Northeast Dock in Fallen Kingdom. The plant would be the most abundant in Camp Cretaceous, seen in great numbers filling the jungles of Isla Nublar while the campers venture their way out of the Island in 2016.

Did you know?

Banana Trees aren’t actual trees, but instead large herbs related to Palms, Lillies and Orchids, without a wooden trunk, Banana’s “trunks” are compromised of leaves wrapped around themselves.

Habitat & Geographical Ranging:

Cultivated mainly in tropical warm environments, Banana species can be found in nearly every continent of the globe, predominantly in Asia and Central America thanks to their extensive rainforest ecosystems. Bananas can also be found in Africa, South America, portions of Oceania and Europe as well as the Mediterranean and islands such as Hawaii. In Jurassic Park, the plant can be found commonly in Isla Nublar and in Mantah Corp’s Island.

Individual Variation:

There are currently over 50 different species of Banana all over the world, those are mainly distinguished by genetic differences, separated in four main sections, those being Australimusa, Callimusa, Rhodochlamys and Eumusa. The third one, Rhodochlamys, is the one to include the two main edible Banana species known, although other species can still produce fruits and their typical “heart” flower too.
