Description:
The Cecropia Tree is a Plant Taxon from the Urticaceae Family, found mainly in various South and Central American Countries. It is predominant in Tropical Environments thanks to its adaptation to the humid climate.
The Cecropia Genus contains over 60 different Species of dioecious trees. Most Species are also myrmecophytic, which means they're adapted to providing food and shelter for Ants. Cecropia in particular is often seen with populations of the Genus Azteca living in its roots and logs. Cecropia Trees are formed of rather thin and lightweight logs, with few branches that show palmately lobed round leaves with a diameter of 30 to 40 centimeters.
In the Jurassic Park Canon, we first see the Cecropia Tree on Isla Nublar during the Endorsement Visit in 1993. More specifically in the lush jungle segments and rather briefly. The Tree would show up in a more clear sight in Jurassic Park III, as Dr. Grant's group finds the Embryonics Facility, a Cecropia Tree can be seen next to them.
The Cecropia Trees are mostly found in the Mainland, with rare exceptions such as C. obtusifolia, which is an invasive Species to the Hawaiian Islands for instance. So it is difficult to say if Cecropia found its way naturally into Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna, or if Ingen introduced the Plant to the Islands' Ecosystems at some point in the 80s.
Size Estimates:
Up to 15m Tall
Did you know?
The Cecropia Trees are used for medicinal purposes in certain places of South America by various Amerindian folks. They're used for multiple purposes such as curing Heart Failure, Cough, Asthma and Bronchitis.
Habitat & Geographical Ranging:
The vast majority of the Cecropia Species are located in the regions of the Andes, encompassing countries such as Colombia and Ecuador, they can be found all the way from the Mexican Coasts into deep South American jungles. Known to inhabit altitudes from 0m to 2.600m.
Certain Species of Cecropia are invasive to Old World localities such as Singapore, Cameroon, Java, Malaysia, Ivory Coast, French Polynesia, and Hawaii. The Tree thrives so well in the environments thanks to its ability to pollinate without a pollinator.
