Family:

Pinaceae

Description:

The Dahurian Larch, or Gmelin Larch, is a species of Larch Conifer Tree native to Eastern Siberia. This tree grows from 10 to 30 meters in height, rarely reaching 40 meters. It grows needle-like leaves that stretch 2 to 3 centimeters in length and light green in color.

In nature, Dahurian Larch form extensive forests in the Eastern Siberian Taiga, growing in altitudes of 50 to 1.200 meters. It is the northernmost tree in the world, managing to survive in frigid tundra environments. Dahurian Larch is also occasionally used in European and North American Botanical Gardens. Despite this, it is not an easy tree to grow in areas with mild winter periods.

The Dahurian Larch is one of the various conifer trees found in the forests of the Biosyn Valley located in the Dolomites Mountains of Italy. It is possible that Biosyn introduced the conifer into the valley when the construction of the corporate compound began. The dense and humid atmosphere of the valley led to moss growth on some Larches. Spanish moss hangs down from the lower base branches while the tree's leaves bud from the higher branches.

Did you know?

Thanks to the extremely dense and humid atmosphere of Biosyn Valley, the Dahurian Larch present within it feature extensive moss and vegetation growth over their branches.

Habitat & Geographical Ranging:

Dahurian Larch is a conifer primarily adapted to taiga environments, but can be found in tundra regions too. In the wild, this tree is native to Eastern Siberia, particularly the countries of Russia, Mongolia and China.

This conifer can also found in Italy, more specifically, Biosyn Valley within the Dolomite Mountain Range, where it grows in a temperate to humid forest. Biosyn Valley is home to various species of dinosaurs who feed on the leaves of the Dahurian Larch.

Individual Variation:

In nature, this conifer can have varying tones of green pigmentation in their leaves. Although rare, their branches may also droop down to a more horizontal posture rather than the common upwards curvature. Before Autumn, the leaves shift to hues of yellow and orange, before falling and leaving a bare trunk until the Spring.

It is observed that some Larches within Biosyn Valley have Spanish moss growing and hanging from their lower branches, likely due the humid atmosphere of the Valley. Higher branches typically grow leaves without interference from the moss.
