Species:

Monstera deliciosa

Common Name:

Monstera/Cheese Plant

Family:

Araceae

Seen in:

• Jurassic Park (1993)
• Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous (2016)

Description:

The Monstera, or Cheese Plant, is a tropical flowering plant with over 50 known species, native from Mexico and cultivated all over the world as one of the most common indoor plants for decoration.

Monstera can grow as a herb or as an evergreen vine, that is, its roots grow on top of trees, managing to stay green throughout the whole year, Monstera in particular can be seen growing up to heights of 20 meters. Its leaves are broad, growing in a heart shape from nearly 90cm long and 75cm wide. They’re commonly known for the unusual gaps and holes that form in the leaf, giving it its second common name, the Cheese Plant, thus resembling a slice of cheese.

Monstera’s fruit resembles a corn, growing to 25cm in length, it is described to be sweet flavored, a mixture between Peach, Banana and Pineapple. As mentioned previously, it is cultivated pretty much worldwide while being native to Mexico, and likely so to Isla Nublar too, as the plant is seen in the rainforests of Jurassic Park.

Did you know?

The scientific name “Monstera deliciosa” comes from Latin, respectively for its monstrous looking leaves, and sweet flavored fruit!

Habitat & Geographical Ranging:

Monstera grows typically in tropical rainforests of Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Brazil and other countries of Central & South America. Monstera is also considered an invasive species to locations such as Hawaii, Seychelles, Ascension Island and Society Islands. In the wild, Monstera can too be found in more unusual places such as North America, Asia, and the west of the Mediterranean.

In Jurassic Park, the Monstera plant can be seen in the jungles of Isla Nublar during the 90s, although rare, it is unclear if the Dinosaurs would feed on the leaves and/or fruits of Monstera at the time. Decades later, during the events of Camp Cretaceous, the Camp survivors would spend most of their time in the jungle, where Monstera could be seen in abundance.
