Window Pane Palm
”The technology, the real trick of it, is still in there. In a darkened room, in an empty building, with a dirty floor, it waits. The flashpoint, the origin of Jurassic Park”
~John Hammond
Species:
Reinhardtia gracilis
Common Name:
Window Pane Palm
Family:
Arecaceae
Seen in:
• Jurassic Park Trespasser (1998)
Description:
The Window Pane Palm is a species of Palm Tree from the Arecaceae Family, belonging to the Subfamily Arecoideae. It is named after the tiny window pane-like gaps that are present at the base of its leaves, of which sport a very distinctive look from other usual Palm species. They are primarily 2 large leaves at the tip of the stem, followed by a pair of thin leaves, who are followed at last by another pair of wider leaves, thus forming 6 leaves total per stem. The leaves are rectangular-shaped, with a zig-zag flat line as the tip.
In Jurassic Park, this species of Palm is first and only seen on Isla Sorna during the late 90s, more specifically at the Southeast regions of the Island which are known to be predominantly tropical and humid, ideal conditions to the species.
Size Estimates:
1.2m to 1.8m Tall
Did you know?
Reinhardtia gracilis is the only species of the Reinhardtia genus to include the dual fishtail-like leaves! This genus presents great variety in the shape of its leaves.
Habitat & Geographical Ranging:
Window Pane Palms are exclusive to Central America and nearby countries such as Mexico and Colombia in North and South Americas respectively. In Central, countries such as Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, Belize, Nicaragua and others form the extent of the Palm.
The Palm species would too be present on Isla Sorna, and at this moment in time, it is the only of the Jurassic Park Islands known to have the species, it is unknown if the species is part of the ecosystem, or was artificially introduced by Ingen in the early 80s.
Both on the mainland and on Sorna, the Palm would be abundant in hot tropical environments, with humid weather and poor soil to thrive and fill the landscape. At Isla Sorna, it would be exclusive to the Southeast Tropical portions, with no evidence of the species occurring in the West of the Island.
Individual Variation:
This species has no known Variation.
